Things to note when children eat candy bars

Pagoda candy is an anthelmintic drug that is widely used in rural China. Many children are pale and thin, and cannot gain weight even if they eat a lot, which confuses many parents. In fact, this is caused by roundworms in the baby's stomach. Although this disease is becoming less and less common with the improvement of living conditions, people in some remote areas still need to use sugar to protect their babies. So, what are the precautions for babies to eat sugar?

What complications can ascariasis cause in children?

① Biliary ascariasis: It is the most common complication, accounting for 64% of serious complications, including massive biliary bleeding, liver abscess, gallstones, gallbladder rupture, bile peritonitis, intestinal perforation, etc. Cases of bile duct obstruction by adult worms occur most often in children with severe infection. The clinical manifestations include sudden severe abdominal cramps, bending over, crying, rolling on the ground, nausea and vomiting. Abdominal examination shows no obvious positive signs or only tenderness in the right upper abdomen. Some children may develop bile tract infection, fever, jaundice, and increased white blood cell count.

② Ascaris intestinal obstruction: A large number of adult worms may cause intestinal obstruction due to ascaris masses, or ascaris toxins may stimulate the intestinal wall and cause spasm. It is more common in children under 10 years old, and the highest incidence rate is in children under 2 years old. It is often an incomplete intestinal obstruction with an acute onset, paroxysmal severe pain around the umbilicus or right lower abdomen, vomiting, abdominal distension, hyperactive bowel sounds, visible intestinal patterns and peristaltic waves, and palpable cord-like masses. Abdominal X-ray examination shows intestinal air and fluid levels.

③ Intestinal perforation and peritonitis: Perforation and peritonitis occur due to ischemia and necrosis of the intestinal wall blood circulation disorder, which is often secondary to long-lasting ascariasis intestinal obstruction or appendicitis. It manifests as severe abdominal pain, obvious peritoneal irritation symptoms, and progressive abdominal distension in case of systemic failure. Abdominal X-ray examination showed free air under the diaphragm.
