Is urea nitrogen the same as urea

Is urea nitrogen the same as urea

Urea is actually a kind of fertilizer widely used by farmers, because urea is mainly an organic compound. It contains a high content of nitrogen, which has a strong nutritional supplement effect on some crops. Urea is also produced in some mammals and fish as the final form of nitrogen metabolism. And there is something called urea nitrogen. Are urea nitrogen and urea the same thing?

The nitrogen in urea and urea concentration can be expressed by urea or urea nitrogen, and the latter is commonly used in China. The liver hydrolyzes the toxic ammonia generated by amino acid metabolism into non-toxic UN, which is one of its detoxification functions. Serum urea nitrogen (BUN) is filtered out by the glomeruli.

Reference value: 2.9~7.5mmol/L (8~21mg/dl).

Elevated BUN, called azotemia, is seen in renal insufficiency, but its increase is only seen when the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) decreases by 50%, and its sensitivity is poor. Extra-renal factors such as wasting diseases, gastrointestinal bleeding, dehydration and high-protein diet can also increase BUN, so it is not the best indicator for assessing GFR. It is usually determined by enzymatic methods and kits are available.

Normal value

The normal value of urea nitrogen is 2.86-7.14 mmol/L, and the measured value will vary depending on the content of the diet.

Urea, also known as carbamide, is an organic compound composed of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen and is a white crystal. One of the simplest organic compounds, it is the major nitrogenous end product of protein metabolism in mammals and some fish. It is also the nitrogen fertilizer with the highest nitrogen content currently available.

As a neutral fertilizer, urea is suitable for a variety of soils and plants. It is easy to store, convenient to use, and has little destructive effect on the soil. It is currently the most widely used chemical nitrogen fertilizer. In industry, urea is synthesized from ammonia and carbon dioxide under certain conditions.

Precautions

1. Urea aqueous solution is unstable in nature. The injection must be dissolved in 10% glucose solution before use and must be used up within 24 hours to prevent decomposition and release of ammonia, which may cause toxicity. It cannot be used after 24 hours.

2. Urea alone has a hemolytic effect and must be diluted with 5% or 10% glucose injection or 10% invert sugar solution. It must not be diluted with sterile water for injection.

3. When instilling urea, it must not overflow into the subcutaneous tissue. In case of overflow, local blockage should be carried out with 0.25% procaine injection, and treatment should be carried out with hot compress or 50% magnesium sulfate wet compress. 4. Urea has many disadvantages and is rarely used in clinical practice.
