The wisdom tooth has a hole. Should it be extracted?

Because the shape of wisdom teeth is slightly different from that of normal teeth, it is easy for food to remain around a person's wisdom teeth. If food remains in the mouth for too long, it may cause inflammation of the wisdom tooth. Not only can cavities occur on other normal teeth, but wisdom teeth are also prone to cavities, and cavities will grow on wisdom teeth. So if a person has a wisdom tooth with a cavity, does it need to be removed?

The symptoms of wisdom teeth are often due to incomplete eruption of wisdom teeth, part of the crown is surrounded by the gums, forming a blind pocket, which makes it easy for food debris to enter but difficult to exit, leading to redness and swelling of the pericoronal soft tissue and pus accumulation in the blind pocket. Patients will have symptoms such as pain, difficulty opening their mouths, fever, headache, and swollen tonsils.

When wisdom teeth grow, they often have insufficient space for eruption, which may lead to incomplete eruption, ectopic growth or impaction. Part of the crown is exposed outside the gums, while part is covered by the gums. A narrow and deep blind pocket is formed between the gums and the tooth, which easily accumulates food debris and bacteria, and is difficult to clean with normal brushing and rinsing. In addition, the crown gums are easily damaged by chewing food, forming ulcers and other symptoms. At the same time, due to the hot weather in summer, it is easy to get angry, which further induces the growth of pericoronitis of wisdom teeth.

When the body's resistance decreases and the virulence of bacteria increases, it can cause inflammation of the tissues around the crown. In the early stages of pericoronitis of wisdom teeth, the symptoms are mild and are often ignored by patients, leading to delayed treatment, which causes the inflammation to develop rapidly and the condition to worsen.

Dentists usually recommend removing wisdom teeth for the following reasons:

1. Tooth decay: If wisdom teeth are decayed, in addition to a simple bite

Except for those cavities on the wisdom tooth surface that are not deep, which can be filled, we recommend extraction for those cavities on the adjacent surfaces, which require very good technology, and those that are very deep and even require root canal treatment, to prevent future problems.

2. Invasion of adjacent teeth: Usually the patient is unaware of the disease, but the dentist finds it out through X-ray diagnosis. Usually there is not enough space for the wisdom teeth to erupt, and they will fall on the second molars, making it difficult to clean the second molars, or even causing partial absorption of the teeth, causing discomfort or toothache for the patient.

3. Insufficient space: Wisdom teeth have been extinct in the history of human evolution. As a result, the dental arches are getting smaller and smaller, and lack of space is common. The swelling and pain are most noticeable when the tumor breaks out. Many people decide to have their wisdom teeth removed because they cannot tolerate the pain.

4. Difficult to clean: Due to lack of space, wisdom teeth often grow crookedly, making it difficult to clean the teeth and leading to tooth decay.

5. No opposing teeth: As mentioned earlier, not everyone will have all four wisdom teeth grow. Therefore, if there is no competing wisdom tooth opposite the wisdom tooth, the wisdom tooth may over-erupt and affect the bite.

6. Impacted teeth: This is usually the most annoying type. Dentists find it difficult to deal with, but patients may not feel it, so they ignore it. This type of tooth is usually buried in the alveolar bone and needs to be extracted if it hurts or if a lesion is diagnosed.
