Introduction to imaging diagnosis of brain tumors

Brain tumors cannot be felt by hand like tumors in other parts of the body, so imaging diagnosis of brain tumors is a common method of detecting brain tumors.

MRI and CT are commonly used imaging diagnostics for brain tumors. MRI can better distinguish normal brain tissue from tumors and can better describe brain edema. MRI provides three-dimensional images of the brain, but the examination process takes 1 hour to complete and the patient needs to be tightly fixed, which is somewhat uncomfortable and restricted. However, the new technology of MRI scanning allows the examination to be performed in a more "open" environment. Although some details may be lost during this scanning process, this scanning device may be a solution for some patients with claustrophobia.

CT scans take only a few minutes, but they do not provide as much information as MRI. CT provides better images of calcified tumors and skull bones. Before CT and MRI imaging of brain tumors, contrast agents are injected intravenously to enhance the tumor for better visualization. Patients diagnosed with tumors by imaging usually undergo plain and enhanced scans. Some tumors may be close to important blood vessels or have features that indicate they originate from blood vessels, in which case angiography should be performed.

Radiological examinations play an important role in the imaging diagnosis and treatment of brain tumors. Based on the imaging data, surgeons can decide whether to perform a biopsy or tumor resection. Radiological examinations are performed during treatment to determine the therapeutic effect of the tumor.
