Indications and contraindications for limb-salvage surgery for bone cancer

The continuous maturity of chemotherapy has promoted and developed limb-salvage surgery for bone cancer, enabling limb-salvage surgery to achieve the same survival rate and recurrence rate as amputation, continuously meeting patients' needs for limb salvage.

1. Indications for limb-salvage surgery

The diseased bone has matured; the tumor is in stage IIA or stage IIB that is sensitive to chemotherapy; the blood vessels and nerve bundles have not been invaded by the tumor and the tumor can be completely removed; the local recurrence rate and metastasis rate after surgery are not higher than amputation; the limb function after surgery is better than that of a prosthesis; the patient strongly requests limb preservation.

2. Contraindications for limb-salvage surgery

The main nerves and blood vessels around the tumor are invaded; pathological fractures occur before radical surgery or during preoperative chemotherapy, and tumor tissue and cells break through the barrier, widely contaminating the surrounding normal tissue with hematoma; the soft tissue conditions around the tumor are poor, such as the main muscles are removed along with the tumor, or they are scarred due to radiotherapy or repeated surgery, or there is a skin infection; improper incision biopsy contaminates the surrounding normal tissue or causes scarring of the skin around the incision, poor elasticity, and poor blood circulation.
