What happens if a tumor ruptures after ovarian cancer surgery?

If the patient has abdominal wall tenderness, rebound and other signs of abdominal irritation during examination, and the original mass has shrunk or disappeared, laparotomy should be performed immediately to remove the cyst and clean the peritoneum after diagnosis.

1. Causes of tumor rupture after ovarian cancer surgery:

It is mainly divided into two types: spontaneous ovarian tumor rupture and traumatic ovarian tumor rupture. The former is often caused by rapid erosion and growth of the tumor, insufficient blood supply to the cyst wall, erosion and penetration of the weak part of the cyst wall; the latter is caused by external force, such as a heavy blow to the abdomen (punch, kick, collision, etc.), childbirth, sexual intercourse, gynecological examination, puncture or abdominal acupuncture treatment, etc., causing tumor wall rupture.

2. Pathogenesis of postoperative tumor rupture in ovarian cancer

Ovarian tumors can cause rupture of the follicle blood vessels, which can lead to failure to stop bleeding quickly or blood not clotting, or blood clots falling off and causing bleeding or fluid overflowing from the ovarian cyst. In severe cases, this can cause massive intra-abdominal bleeding.

3. Symptoms of tumor rupture after ovarian cancer surgery

The severity of symptoms depends on the size of the rupture, the nature and amount of cystic fluid flowing into the abdominal cavity. Rupture of large cystic tumors or mature teratomas often causes sudden or persistent severe abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, sometimes leading to internal bleeding, peritonitis and shock. If the tumor rupture is small, only mild or moderate abdominal pain is felt.

4. Signs of tumor rupture after ovarian cancer surgery

Abdominal examination revealed tenderness and rebound pain, tense abdominal muscles, and resistance to pressure. The abdomen may also be distended or have shifting dullness. Gynecological and abdominal examinations revealed that the original tumor had disappeared or shrunk, and the uterus and mass had a floating feeling.
