The benefits of radiotherapy after colorectal cancer surgery

Postoperative radiotherapy for patients with colorectal cancer is referred to as postoperative radiotherapy. It is often used to more accurately determine the irradiation range of radioactive rays and formulate a treatment plan based on surgical findings and some auxiliary examinations before radiotherapy.

Postoperative radiotherapy has many benefits:

First, after the initial tumor lesion is removed, the areas where tumor cells may remain are marked and located, so that the irradiation site is more precise, the irradiation is more selective, and the effect is better.

Secondly, it is helpful to increase the killing rate of residual cells by radiation. Therefore, for patients whose colorectal cancer lesions cannot be completely removed or whose tumors are difficult to completely remove, postoperative radiation exposure to the surgical site and a certain range of surrounding tissues is more effective in eliminating residual tumor cells remaining in the patient's body.

Again, colorectal cancer patients can take a combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy after surgery. At the same time as radiotherapy, drugs are used to kill tumor cells remaining in the patient's body. It is generally believed that, except for some early patients, patients after surgical resection of advanced colorectal cancer need to receive a combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

To sum up, after surgical treatment of colorectal cancer, in order to prevent recurrence, radiotherapy should be used as an auxiliary treatment to achieve the best cure effect and enable the patient to recover health as soon as possible.
