Fiberoptic laryngoscopy and electronic laryngoscopy for laryngeal cancer

Fiberoptic laryngoscopy and electronic laryngoscopy for laryngeal cancer

Laryngeal cancer is the most common malignant tumor of the larynx. The diagnosis is first based on typical clinical manifestations, such as hoarseness, inspiratory dyspnea, stridor, sore throat, dysphagia, etc., followed by indirect laryngoscopy. When the examination results are unsatisfactory or difficult to confirm, fiberoptic laryngoscopy and electronic laryngoscopy can be used to further clarify the diagnosis.

1. Fiberoptic laryngoscopy

Fiberoptic laryngoscope is a soft endoscope made of optical fiber. It has the advantages of being bendable, being able to be operated under surface anesthesia, and being able to take biopsies or other treatments at the same time. During fiberoptic laryngoscope examination, after the surface of the nasal mucosa, oropharynx and pharyngeal mucosa is anesthetized, it is introduced from the nasal cavity to examine the larynx and hypopharynx. When laryngeal cancer is suspected, biopsies can be taken at the same time, and minor surgeries such as polyp removal and foreign body removal can be performed. It has a wide range of clinical applications.

2. Electronic laryngoscopy

Electronic laryngoscope is a new type of soft endoscope developed in recent years. Its appearance is similar to that of fiber laryngoscope, but its image quality is significantly improved. Electronic laryngoscope uses CCD imaging at its front end, which has the following advantages: ① clear image; ② the lock button on the handle of the electronic laryngoscope can lock the instantaneous image, just like taking a photo, and save the image with diagnostic significance at any time; ③ it can be connected to a computer to store images, which can be retrieved at any time and printed as pictures. Remote consultation can be carried out for difficult or special cases.
