The reason why the incidence of liver cancer is higher in men than in women

Clinical statistics show that the incidence of liver cancer in men is much higher than that in women. In high-incidence areas of liver cancer, the ratio of male to female incidence is (3~4):1, and in low-incidence areas it is (1~2):1.

The reason for this result is still unclear. However, in animal experiments, male rats are more sensitive to carcinogens such as aflatoxin and are more likely to develop liver cancer, indicating that the gender difference in the incidence of liver cancer is mainly related to the different susceptibility of men and women to liver cancer-causing factors.

In recent years, researchers have revealed the difference in the probability of liver cancer between men and women by studying the differences in gene expression under inflammatory stimulation. The researchers found that under the stimulation of chronic inflammation, the gene expression profiles of male and female rats are different, and male and female rats can show better resistance to inflammatory responses.

Therefore, friends over 40 years old, especially male friends, should have regular physical examinations every year, especially those with a history of hepatitis for more than 5 years, or those who have been diagnosed with cirrhosis and have a history of alcoholism for more than 5 years, or those with a history of diabetes for many years should undergo liver B-ultrasound, alpha-fetoprotein and other tests every six months.
