Can tubal ligation prevent ovarian cancer?

Can tubal ligation prevent ovarian cancer?

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists committee proposed the view that "removal of the fallopian tube may prevent ovarian cancer" in the February 2015 issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists believes that compared with simple hysterectomy or tubal ligation, salpingectomy or tubal sterilization at the time of hysterectomy seems to be safe and does not increase complications.

For women who undergo routine pelvic surgery, counseling on the risks and benefits of salpingectomy should include an informed consent form for oophorectomy and bilateral salpingectomy. Among gynecological cancers, ovarian cancer has the highest mortality rate; it has now risen to fifth place in the ranking of female cancer mortality rates. The survival rate of ovarian cancer has not improved significantly in the past 50 years. It is unfair to the ovaries to think that removing the ovaries will prevent the occurrence of ovarian cancer. In theory, the best preventive method for high-risk patients is to remove the fimbria of the fallopian tube. Since the onset of ovarian epithelial cancer is generally over 40 years old, it is recommended that the fallopian tubes of these people be removed when reproductive function is no longer needed. However, there is currently no data to support this issue in academia, only theoretical necessity.
When the fallopian tubes become inflamed, both sides often get inflamed at the same time, and there is a possibility of ectopic pregnancy in the next pregnancy. A comparative study found that there was no statistical difference in the chance of getting pregnant again between women who had fallopian tubes removed and those who kept their fallopian tubes. Therefore, from the perspective of protecting yourself from ectopic pregnancy and ovarian cancer, removal is really necessary. Even if both fallopian tubes are useless, as long as you have money, it is still possible to have a child with the help of modern assisted reproductive technology.
