1. Causes of disease

The ectopic tumor of embryonic tissue in the spinal canal develops from the germ layer cells remaining during embryonic development. According to the different tissue structures, it can be divided into epidermoid cyst, dermoid cyst, teratoid cyst and teratoma. The first two are formed by ectoderm tissue. Teratoma contains 3 germ layer structures, while teratoid cyst contains 2 germ layer structures.

2. Pathogenesis

Intraspinal teratoma is a mixture of cells originating from the three germ layers. According to histological characteristics, teratomas can be divided into three types: mature, immature and malignant teratomas. The origin of intraspinal teratoma is still controversial. Poeze et al. believe that intraspinal teratoma may originate from early embryogenesis, immature germ cell dislocation, ependymal diverticulum formation of the central canal of the spinal cord, or abnormal embryonic development. Some patients may have tufts of hair growing on the skin near the teratoma, or accompanied by spina bifida. This manifestation is most likely caused by the dislocation of immature germ cells in the early embryogenesis.
