What is medullary carcinoma? What are the treatments for medullary carcinoma?

In clinical practice, there are various types of tumors. Many patients do not know what medullary carcinoma is. Medullary carcinoma has clear boundaries and is soft to the touch. Mammary X-ray shows a clear-bounded mass shadow, which is easily confused with benign lesions. Macroscopic examination shows that medullary carcinoma tumors are round, with clear boundaries, soft texture, and fleshy brown or gray appearance. Focal necrosis and hemorrhage are common, and the average tumor diameter ranges from 2.0 to 2.9 cm.

Canceration is a popular term among the people. The specific situations are divided into the following two types:

1. Malignant transformation: refers to the process of benign tumor cells transforming into malignant tumor cells;

2. Carcinogenesis: refers to the process of benign epithelial tumor cells transforming into cancer cells.

Among malignant tumors, those originating from epithelial cells are generally called carcinomas, while those originating from mesenchymal tissues (fibrous connective tissue, fat, muscle, blood vessels, bone tissue, etc.) are called sarcomas.

What is Medullary Carcinoma

There are reports that the prognosis of MC is better than that of ordinary IDC, but this has been questioned by others. The 10-year survival rate of MC is above 50-90%, and different diagnostic criteria lead to different survival rates. Some research reports emphasize the need to formulate strict diagnostic criteria that reflect the clinical-pathological characteristics of MC and evaluate them through tumor-specific prognosis.

Some studies have shown that MC with more than three positive axillary lymph nodes has a poor prognosis, or no difference from common ductal carcinoma with the same condition. However, less than 10% of MCs show lymph node metastasis, so this can also explain part of the reason why MC has a better prognosis.
