Is the recurrence rate high after hemisection of thyroid cancer?

There is a certain risk of recurrence after hemisection of thyroid cancer, which is mainly related to factors such as insufficient surgical resection, insufficient lymph node dissection, residual tumor, insufficient postoperative radiotherapy and chemotherapy, etc. Therefore, patients after hemisection of thyroid cancer should follow the doctor's advice for care and undergo regular checkups.

1. Insufficient surgical resection: Hemisection of thyroid cancer generally refers to total thyroidectomy plus neck lymph node dissection. The surgical scope is large and the risk of postoperative recurrence is relatively high. It is recommended that patients undergo routine surgery and perform pathological frozen sections during the operation to clarify the extent of the lesion. If there is residual lesion, a second surgery should be performed in time;

2. Insufficient lymph node clearance: Patients with thyroid cancer generally need to undergo total or subtotal thyroidectomy according to their condition to reduce the tumor burden. If thorough clearance is not achieved, lymph node metastasis or recurrence is likely to occur after surgery, resulting in a high recurrence rate after hemisection of thyroid cancer. Patients can undergo ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy to determine whether the tumor has lymph node metastasis;

3. Tumor residue: Radionuclide therapy or other radiotherapy is required after hemisection of thyroid cancer. If the treatment range is not enough, some tumor tissue may remain, resulting in the growth and recurrence of cancer cells, leading to a high recurrence rate after hemisection of thyroid cancer.

4. Insufficient postoperative radiotherapy and chemotherapy: After hemisection of thyroid cancer, some patients still need to follow the doctor's advice for radiotherapy or chemotherapy to kill the remaining cancer cells. If radiotherapy or chemotherapy is insufficient, some cancer cells may grow rapidly, resulting in a high recurrence rate after hemisection of thyroid cancer.

Patients should also pay attention to regular checkups after surgery. They can undergo neck CT, MRI and other examinations according to their own conditions, which will help to detect lesions early. At the same time, they should also pay attention to rest and maintain a good mood in their daily lives, which will help their bodies recover.
