What are the symptoms of nasopharyngeal carcinoma recurrence?

1. Patients with recurrent NPC are in great pain, usually with poor quality of life, severe pain in the face and tongue, and even severe pain, requiring long-term use of strong painkillers. The nasopharynx is close to the skull base and carotid artery. Recurrent NPC will invade the skull base bone and then spread into the skull, causing severe headaches and cranial complications, and eventually death. However, recurrent NPC often invades the carotid artery, causing fatal hemorrhage, and due to the limited mouth opening of patients after radiotherapy, death from bleeding may occur. Attention should be paid to the recurrence of NPC.

2. The vast majority of nasopharyngeal carcinomas are undifferentiated carcinomas or poorly differentiated squamous carcinomas, which are sensitive to radiation. Radiotherapy is the first choice for the treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Radiotherapy has a good therapeutic effect on most nasopharyngeal carcinomas, with a cure rate of about 60%, but 40% of patients still experience symptoms of nasopharyngeal carcinoma recurrence after radiotherapy. There are many factors that cause the recurrence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma, including tumor biological characteristics, clinical stage payment, and treatment technology. The earlier the clinical stage payment, the better the treatment effect and the lower the recurrence rate. On the basis of local squamous metaplasia, nasopharyngeal carcinoma also has new cancer foci.

3. Surgical resection of recurrent lesions has been proven to be an effective treatment. However, the nasopharynx is located deep in the skull base, close to the center, and surrounded by important neurovascular structures, so the operation is complex and difficult. In recent years, based on a large number of skull base surgeries, we have conducted in-depth research on the surgical operation of recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma, using different surgical methods for different patients, and achieved good results.
