Scallions in the Yangtze River Basin are generally sown in March and April and harvested in June and July; they can also be sown in September and October and harvested in April and May of the following year. During this period, the market is supplied with immature seedlings, and the young leaves are mainly eaten.

It is advisable to choose fields with flat terrain, good drainage and fertile soil for planting, whether sandy loam or clay loam. The soil acidity and alkalinity are not strict, and slightly acidic to slightly alkaline are both acceptable. However, it is not suitable for continuous cropping for many years, nor is it suitable for intercropping with other onion and garlic vegetables. Generally, it needs to be replanted in another place after 1 to 2 years of planting. After selecting a plot of land, it should be plowed immediately. Generally, 2500 to 3500 kg of decomposed manure or manure is applied per mu, plus 30 to 35 kg of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, or 40 kg of compound fertilizer. After application, the soil is plowed and harrowed to make ridges, which are about 2 meters wide, with furrows 40 centimeters wide and 15 to 25 centimeters deep, so that the "three furrows" are matched and can be irrigated and drained.
