Crazy bug eaters

Crazy bug eaters

One of the most surprising things I heard recently was about insect feasts. Many people are starting to try eating insects. So is it really possible to eat insects? Let's take a look at how those crazy bug eaters eat insects.

1. Global food shortage: FAO report states that edible insects

According to data from the United Nations, there are still 87 million people in the world who are in a state of long-term hunger, and more than 2 billion people suffer from micronutrient deficiencies (also known as "hidden hunger"). It is estimated that the global population will reach 9 billion in 2050. In order to feed these people, current food production will need to at least double. Humanity faces many challenges such as scarce land resources, overfishing of marine fisheries, climate change and water shortages. Significantly increasing food production is almost an impossible task. "What to eat tomorrow" is an urgent problem that needs to be solved at the moment.

A report recently released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) titled "Edible Insects: Future Prospects for Food and Feed Security" has found the answer for us. The report points out that there are more than 1,900 edible insect species in the world, and the traditional food of at least 2 billion people in the world includes insects. Many insects are rich in high-quality protein, multiple vitamins, fiber and minerals, and can serve as the main source of human food, helping to alleviate the current global food and feed shortages.

Bug dishes

It is understood that many insects are rich in protein, fat, calcium, iron and zinc, and the content is even higher than traditional meat.

In Bangkok, Thailand and Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, eating insects has become a food culture. Restaurants in many parts of the European Union have begun selling dishes containing insect ingredients.

2. Collect delicious insect snacks from all over the world

Maybe you want to try fried crickets, or maybe bamboo worms are just the thing to tickle your taste buds. Don’t worry, you won’t be disappointed by any of the street insect vendors, as they often sell more than a dozen insect snacks at a time. First fried in vegetable oil and then sprinkled with some soy sauce for flavor, how can you not be tempted?

Crickets from Laos, bamboo worms from Thailand, spiders from Cambodia, whiteflies from the Netherlands, scorpions from Beijing... maybe there is always one that suits you!

3. Foreigners who are crazy about eating insects

Recently, according to foreign media reports, the fried insect snack commonly seen on the streets of Bangkok, Thailand, is about to enter the "mainstream" market and be sold in Bangkok's department stores in beautiful packaging. One entrepreneur said he will launch fried crickets and bugs in salt, cheese, seaweed or barbecue flavours in March for 25 baht (S$1.05) a pack.

In order to encourage Americans to change their mindsets and motivate potential insect eaters, an American college student, Kym Rios, has been eating insects for every meal for 30 days. Over the past month, he has been in good health and has been creating new recipes. Through this self-challenge, he wanted to prove that if even he could eat bugs for thirty days in a row, then anyone could.
