How to recover from a sprained finger

How to recover from a sprained finger

Fingers are used very frequently in daily life, and when using toilet paper, you should try to avoid using your fingers for activities with a large range of motion, otherwise you may accidentally strain your fingers. Because if a normal person loses a finger, it will have a great impact on their normal life, so if a finger is sprained, it will also have a very big impact on their normal life. So what are the recovery methods that can be taken after a finger strain?

Stop hand movement

After spraining a finger, stop exerting force with the injured finger in time to avoid worsening the injury of the sprained finger. It is best to keep the injured finger in a stable state and not move it.

Elevate the affected finger

If you sprain your finger, you can raise the injured finger to reduce blood stasis and help relieve pain and swelling. If you leave your sprained finger hanging down, it may cause blood to flow downward, increasing the swelling after the sprain.

Apply cold compress to the affected area

After spraining a finger, you can apply cold compress to the injured finger in time. Apply a towel soaked in cold water or an ice bag to the injured area to cause blood vessels to constrict, reduce local congestion, lower tissue temperature, and inhibit nerve sensation, which can relieve pain and reduce swelling. Please note that cold compress is generally only suitable within 24 hours after spraining a muscle. It is not suitable to use cold compress for a long time.

Heat relief

24 hours or 48 hours after spraining your finger, you can soak a towel in hot water or apply a hot water bag to the injured area for about 30 minutes at a time. This can improve local blood and lymphatic circulation, promote metabolism, facilitate tissue repair and the absorption of metabolic products and blood stasis, and promote healing.

massage

In the later stages of a sprained finger, massage can be used to reduce swelling and promote metabolism. The treatment methods for tendon injuries generally focus on pressing, massaging, pushing and holding, supplemented by kneading, pinching, rubbing and rolling. Specific method: Stretch out the injured hand with the palm facing down, support the wrist with one hand, and pinch the inner and outer sides of the injured knuckle with the thumb and index finger of the other hand, then gently knead it. After the pain is relieved, slightly increase the force and knead it for 2 minutes. Please note that you should not massage a sprained muscle in the early stages, as this may cause bleeding and increase swelling. And if you don’t know how to massage yourself, you should find a professional doctor to do it, and don’t massage casually.

Compression bandage

If the sprained tendon is broken, it can be fixed and bandaged with adhesive ointment or elastic bandage to enhance its stability, limit the abnormal range of movement of muscles and ligaments, allow the injured tissue to get proper rest, and facilitate healing of the injury. Be careful not to bandage too tightly to avoid local blood flow obstruction.

Drug treatment

Generally, 24 hours after a sprained finger, you can use some blood stasis and swelling-removing drugs or medicated liquor and apply them to the injured area to help the blood stasis diffuse and aid recovery.

Medical examination

If you feel severe pain after spraining your finger, or the injury is serious, you should seek medical attention and treatment promptly, or use some medicine to relax the muscles, promote blood circulation, remove blood stasis and relieve pain under the guidance of a doctor.

Final reminder: Within 1-2 weeks after a finger injury, the injured part should be given adequate rest and kept immobilized if necessary to avoid using the injured part to exert force again or subjecting it to pressure.
