The room should be well ventilated; a dry disposable mouthpiece (if the mouthpiece is not disposable, it should be disinfected every time a test subject is changed. When testing each person, pour out the saliva from the mouthpiece downwards and make sure it is completely dry after disinfection). Place the spirometer on a stable desktop, check whether the power cord and interface are secure, press the work button and the LCD screen displays 0, indicating that the machine has entered the working state. It is best to test after preheating for 5 minutes.

First, tell the subject not to be nervous and to try his best; blowing at a moderate speed and force is best. Ask the subject to stand facing the instrument, holding the blowing mouthpiece; stand facing the spirometer and try blowing 1 to 2 times. First, see if the instrument responds, and also check if there is any air leakage from the mouthpiece or nose, adjust the mouthpiece and use a nose clip (or pinch your nostrils yourself).

After the subject takes one or two deeper breaths than usual, he or she should take a deeper breath and exhale slowly through the mouth until he or she can no longer exhale. After the exhalation is completed, the number displayed on the LCD screen is the vital capacity in milliliters.
