How to clean scale on a water heater

How to clean scale on a water heater

After a busy day, every time we return home, we hope to turn on the water heater and take a hot shower. However, we will find that the water heater will produce scale after being used for a long time. When the water heater has scale, it will affect the cleaning work. In fact, every day we should not only clean our bodies, but also the supplies that help us clean. Let us learn about the method of cleaning the scale of the water heater.

According to professional cleaning staff, ordinary household electric water heaters will produce a certain amount of scale after being used for a period of time. The formation of scale will undoubtedly affect the efficiency and life of the electric water heater, and will have adverse effects on the human body. This is also a common problem faced by electric water heater users. Therefore, for electric water heaters, professionals recommend that you ask a professional to clean it once every three years; you can do a minor cleaning yourself once every six months. Want to know how to clean your own electric water heater? Come and have a look!

Cleaning steps

1. Before cleaning the electric water heater, you need to unplug the power supply, cut off any form of heating of the electric water heater, and close the cold water and hot water angle valves under the electric water heater.

2. Open the seal of the water heater and replace the magnesium rod inside the electric water heater. The function of the magnesium rod is to reduce the corrosion of the heating tube and cause the scale to produce a chemical reaction. The magnesium rod used for a long time will produce flocs or lumps wrapping the rod surface until the magnesium rod is completely consumed. Therefore, if you use the electric water heater for a long time, it is best to replace the magnesium rod with a new one in time, otherwise it will easily leak water and electricity.

3. Remove the limiting device of the pressure relief valve wrench (usually a component with a plastic square hole, a safety piece used to prevent the pressure relief valve from being accidentally opened), and use a plastic tube to connect the small tube at the pressure relief port of the pressure relief valve to draw out the water in the inner tank; turn the pressure relief valve wrench 90 degrees from the vertical position, and the pressure relief valve has been opened.

4. Disassemble the joint of the metal hose at the hot water pipe. You should see water flowing out of the pressure relief valve. Drain the water in the inner tank. When there is basically no water flowing out of the pressure relief valve, the water in the inner tank has basically been released, and most of the scale (floc) in the inner tank will also be discharged.

When there is basically no water flowing out of the pressure relief valve, the water in the inner tank has basically been released, and most of the scale (floc) in the inner tank will also be discharged.

5. Next, connect the metal hose of the cold water pipe to the hot water outlet of the water heater, open the cold water angle valve, and let the cold water flush into the inner tank from the hot water pipe. At this time, you can see water mixed with scale continue to flow out of the outlet of the pressure relief valve. Repeat this step many times. After multiple flushings, the water flowing out of the pressure relief valve outlet is very clean, indicating that the inner tank is basically clean.

6. Restore the pressure relief valve to its original shape, put the lever down again, reconnect the hot water pipe with the hot water angle valve, and reconnect the cold water pipe with the cold water angle valve; open the hot water angle valve and the cold water angle valve respectively, and open the hot water faucet at the hot water pipe faucet connected to the hot water angle valve (such as the hot water faucet in the bathroom, or the hot water faucet on the washbasin). After water comes out of the hot water faucet, close the hot water faucet to ensure that the air in the inner tank has been drained and filled with water.

After water comes out of the hot water faucet, close the hot water faucet to ensure that the air in the inner tank has been drained and filled with water.

7. Check whether there is leakage at each joint. If there is leakage, reconnect it to ensure that there is no leakage at each joint. Plug in the electric water heater, turn on the power, check the heating situation, and if everything is normal, the cleaning work is completed.

When the water heater is used for a certain period of time, scale will slowly form inside it. Especially after a long period of cleaning, if the water is not completely drained out, it will become smelly and moldy, and even the scale produced can easily cause the water heater to become blocked or corroded. Therefore, we need some methods to clean it. You can follow the above methods to do a simple cleaning. I hope everyone can study it seriously.
