What are the symptoms of skull sclerosis

What are the symptoms of skull sclerosis

The skull is the bone of our head. If the skull becomes hardened, obvious symptoms will appear. Cranial sclerosis can be divided into mild and severe types. Generally, mild type is common in adolescents, while severe type is common in infants and young children.

Clinical manifestations

1. Lightweight

Also known as the benign type, it is more common in adolescents and adults and has a better prognosis. Patients may have varying degrees of anemia and cranial nerve compression symptoms in the early stages, or may have no obvious symptoms, and the disease is often discovered only through X-ray examinations in adulthood. Blood acid phosphatase may be elevated.

2. Heavy Duty

Also known as the malignant type, it is common in infants and young children. The disease develops early and progresses rapidly, often affecting the nervous and blood systems. Symptoms include anemia, bleeding, and enlarged liver and spleen. Neurological manifestations include cerebral edema, decreased vision or blindness, nystagmus, macrocephaly, strabismus, facial nerve paralysis, deafness, hydrocephalus, intracranial hemorrhage, mental retardation, epilepsy, trigeminal nerve damage, optic nerve atrophy, etc.

diagnosis

The diagnosis of osteopetrosis is based on:

1. The disease often occurs in childhood, with developmental delay, hydrocephalus and chronic compressive symptoms due to skull hardening, such as facial nerve paralysis, hearing loss, optic nerve atrophy, etc. The skull is hard and brittle, prone to fractures, which are often transverse and difficult to heal. Cutting the skull with a knife during surgery is like sharpening chalk.

2. Patients may experience anemia, enlarged liver, spleen and lymph nodes, and elevated serum acid phosphatase due to hematopoietic disorders.

3. The same lesions also exist in the epiphyses of bones in other parts of the body.
