What are the symptoms of goiter

Goiter is not uncommon, and the occurrence of these problems will affect a person's healthy life, such as congestion in the face and neck, or patients may experience difficulty breathing, changes in voice and other symptoms.

1. Congestion of the face and neck: Goiter often causes compression of large blood vessels, and compression of the jugular vein is common. At this time, congestion of the patient's face and neck, such as enlarged glands extending to the back of the sternum, often compresses the large vein trunks. If the compression is on the superior vena cava, the venous blood return of the head and neck is blocked, which will lead to facial edema, varicose veins and foramen of the jugular, edema of the chest skin and upper arms, and prominent varicose foramen are symptoms of goiter.

2. Patients have difficulty breathing: This is more common in patients with large goiters, such as those who have tracheal compression and shortness of breath during movement. When the tumor is too large, the trachea may be displaced, bent, or narrowed, leading to severe dyspnea and damage from the goiter. It is also a symptom of an enlarged thyroid gland.

3. Changes in voice tone: When the recurrent laryngeal nerve is compressed, irritation symptoms are often found at first, such as common hoarseness and spasmodic cough. When the recurrent laryngeal nerve is paralyzed, severe hoarseness and aphonia are often found, which are symptoms of goiter.

4. Eye symptoms: When the patient's cervical sympathetic nerves are compressed, the pupil on the same side will dilate. For example, when the nerves are severely compressed and paralyzed, the eyeball will sink, the eyelid will droop, and the pupil will shrink. These are all symptoms of goiter.

5. Dysphagia : Dysphagia caused by esophageal compression is usually rare and is only seen in people with goiter that stretches between the esophagus and trachea, or when there is malignant change, symptoms of persistent dysphagia often appear.
