How to reduce fever physically if it persists, 4 steps are essential

Although high fever is a common disease, prolonged high fever can have a huge adverse effect on the baby. In this case, the mother should wear less clothes, dissipate heat for the child, and help the child cool down physically, including cold wet compresses on the head, ice pillows on the head, warm water wipes or warm water baths, alcohol wipes, etc. In addition, you should replenish sufficient water in time and do not take medicine casually.

First, wear less clothes to cool your child

The traditional idea is that when a child has a fever, you should wrap the child tightly with clothes and quilts to "force" out the sweat. In fact, this is wrong. When children have a fever, they will shiver and parents may think that their children have chills, but in fact, this is because their increased body temperature causes convulsions.

Second, help your child cool down physically. There are the following common methods:

1. Cold wet compress on the head: Soak a soft towel in 20℃ ~ 30℃ cold water, squeeze it slightly to prevent dripping, fold it and place it on the forehead, change it every 3 to 5 minutes.

2. Head ice pillow: Fill the ice bag half full with small ice cubes and a small amount of water, expel the air from the bag, press the bag opening tightly, and place it on the pillow after there is no water leakage.

3. Wipe with warm water or take a warm bath: Wipe the child's head, armpits, limbs with a warm, wet towel or take a warm bath, scrub the skin more to promote heat dissipation.

4. Alcohol bath: suitable for cooling down high fever. Prepare 200-300 ml of 20%-35% alcohol and use it to rub the limbs and back.

Third, drink plenty of water and don’t take any medicine casually.

When the fever is high, breathing speeds up and sweating causes the body to lose a lot of water. Therefore, parents should give their children plenty of water when they have a fever, increase urine volume, and promote the excretion of toxins in the body.

Fourth, please take the medicine under the guidance of a doctor

Don't be too hasty when giving medicine to a baby with fever. If the fever does not subside after taking the medicine once, you need to wait 4 to 6 hours before taking the medicine again. The dosage of antipyretic medicine given to babies should not be too large. For example, for the commonly used drug paracetamol, children should take 10 to 15 mg per kilogram of body weight. If a baby takes more than 3 grams of paracetamol per day, acute poisoning may occur, and even fatal liver damage may occur. It is not advisable to let the baby take multiple antipyretic drugs in a short period of time, and the temperature reduction should not be too large or too fast, otherwise the baby's body temperature will not rise or he will faint. Antipyretics only have a fever-reducing effect when the baby has a fever. When the baby does not have a fever, taking antipyretics will not prevent fever. After giving your baby antipyretics, if your baby sweats a lot, you should replenish him with water in time to avoid collapse.

Experts recommend that if a child's fever does not exceed 38.5℃, only physical cooling is recommended. However, if the temperature exceeds 38.5℃ or the child has a history of convulsions, antipyretics should be used promptly. During the medication process, parents should be careful not to let their children take a certain type of antipyretic drug for too long. If the fever lasts for more than two days, it is best to switch to another type of drug.
