What causes high blood creatinine?

Creatinine is a metabolic product of muscle in the human body, and blood creatinine is also a type of creatinine. Changes in blood creatinine concentration are related to the glomeruli. Many people want to know what causes high blood creatinine. This situation may be related to kidney problems.

1. Generally speaking, the normal value of blood creatinine is 44~133umol/L. It is considered high if it exceeds this range. When blood creatinine exceeds 133umol/L, it means that the kidneys are damaged and renal insufficiency and renal failure have occurred.

2. Changes in serum creatinine concentration are mainly determined by the filtration capacity of the glomerulus (glomerular filtration rate). As filtration capacity decreases, creatinine concentration increases. A serum creatinine level higher than normal usually means kidney damage. Serum creatinine can more accurately reflect the extent of renal parenchymal damage, but it is not a sensitive indicator. Because blood creatinine will only increase significantly when the glomerular filtration rate drops to one-third of that of a normal person. Because the human kidneys have strong metabolic capacity, when kidney damage is mild, most people do not feel obvious discomfort. Therefore, when many people actually experience nausea, vomiting, and dizziness, their kidneys are actually severely damaged, and their blood creatinine begins to rise significantly.

3. People with existing renal insufficiency, if combined with infection, including colds, pneumonia, intestinal infections, urinary tract infections, etc., may experience elevated blood creatinine in a short period of time. The reasons for high creatinine include water loss in the body, such as fever, sweating, reduced water intake, polyuria leading to blood concentration, and reduced renal blood flow, which can lead to increased blood creatinine. Patients with existing kidney disease who use drugs that damage the kidneys may experience elevated blood creatinine, which may even be irreversible.
