What causes red, itchy and swollen eyes? Be careful of these eye diseases

Everyone must be very concerned about the phenomenon of red, itchy and swollen eyes, and don’t know what is going on. Ophthalmologists tell you that these diseases can cause red, itchy and swollen eyes. Common ones include conjunctivitis, stye, dry eyes, especially dry eyes, which is very common among computer users.

1. Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is a common eye infection that causes the conjunctiva (the thin layer of tissue that covers the eye) to become red and inflamed.

Symptoms: Itching, tearing, and sometimes an increase in sticky eye secretions that adhere to the eyelashes.

Cause: There are many causes of conjunctivitis. It may be caused by bacterial or viral infection, or it may be caused by allergies or external stimuli, such as accidentally getting shampoo into the eyes.

How to treat: Conjunctivitis can heal on its own after a few weeks, and appropriate use of antibiotic eye drops can prevent bacterial infection. Allergic conjunctivitis can also be treated with anti-allergy medications such as antihistamines.

Note: Do not wear contact lenses during conjunctivitis.

Tips: Sticky secretions can be carefully wiped off with a damp cotton swab. Remember to wash your hands frequently and avoid sharing pillows or towels with others to prevent the spread of infection.

2. Stye

A stye is an annoying little abscess that develops on the inside or outside of your eyelid. It is usually caused by a bacterial infection, and most of us will inevitably deal with a stye once or twice in our lifetime.

Symptoms: Styes are usually visible on the surface of the skin, but they may also grow inside the eyelid and the patient may feel pain. A stye can be easily confused with a chalazion, but a chalazion is a round, smooth, firm lump that usually occurs slightly above the edge of the eyelid.

Cause: Stye is caused by the inability of oily gland secretions to be discharged smoothly and their accumulation in the skin. Both styes and chalazia are usually harmless and rarely cause damage to the eye or vision.

How to treat: Styes usually heal on their own within one to two weeks, especially after the lump ruptures and the pus is drained, the healing process is very fast.

Note: Never squeeze a stye by yourself. If you feel uncomfortable, you can use over-the-counter painkillers appropriately.

3. Dry eyes

Dry eyes is a common eye discomfort symptom caused by insufficient tear gland secretion or rapid evaporation of tears. This can cause the tear film, or lipid layer that protects the eye, to dry out.

Symptoms: Once the tear film is damaged, the eyeball will become dry and further develop into redness, inflammation, foreign body sensation and itching. Complications of dry eye also include conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers.

Sometimes dry eyes are just a temporary condition, a reaction to changes in the external environment or caused by other diseases.

Causes: There are many causes of dry eyes, including excessive use of computers or smartphones, excessive concentration leading to low blinking frequency, long hours of driving, hot and windy weather, wearing contact lenses, dry air (such as in an air-conditioned room) or lack of water.

Thyroid problems, allergies, some immune system diseases (such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus), skin diseases around the eyes and vitamin A deficiency can make the eyes fragile and greatly increase the chance of dry eye syndrome.

How to treat: Dry eye problems tend to worsen as we age. Using liposome spray helps repair the lipid layer in the body's natural tear film, moisturizing and soothing uncomfortable eyes.
