What causes Meibomian gland blockage?

Meibomian gland blockage is a disease that many young people will encounter. Please note that the blockage is caused by the overactive meibomian glands and the inability to excrete secretions. If the situation is more serious, the patient needs surgical treatment to drain the pus.

1. Meibomian gland blockage occurs when the meibomian glands of young people are overactive and their secretions cannot be excreted, causing blockage. This will form a chalazion. Small ones can be treated with hot compresses and may disappear on their own. Those with infections need antibiotic eye drops. Large ones require surgical scraping. The reason for the blockage of the lower meibomian glands is that the lower meibomian glands are repeatedly blocked. Some time ago, due to excessive use of the eyes, the eye muscles over-contracted, the eyes bulged, and the inner corners of the eyes were always stinging. One day, the lower eyelids were bruised for a week (the bruise disappeared the next day). After putting on glasses, the eye muscles relaxed and the eyeballs sank. The blockage of the lower meibomian glands became lighter after wearing glasses. If I don't wear them for a period of time, the lower meibomian glands will become blocked again. Doctor, what is going on? It has been more than 3 months since the onset of the disease. Meibomian gland massage. One is to use local hot compresses to promote the patency of the gland excretion outlet. If there are small bulges, they can be removed with a sterilized needle and anti-inflammatory drugs can be applied. If the blockage is not treated for a long time, it will cause meibomian glanditis. The white-spotted stones can be picked out with a sterilized needle, and hot compresses can be used to treat meibomian gland obstruction, which is a common eye disease.

2. Swollen eyes are related to sleep, drinking water and sleeping posture. It is recommended not to drink too much water before going to bed. Generally speaking, there are many reasons for swollen eyes, such as improper use of cosmetics, skin diseases, heart and kidney dysfunction, and angioedema. It is recommended to check and confirm the diagnosis. The treatment method is to use some tear supplement medicine during the day, such as sodium hyaluronate eye drops or tear drops (New Tear Drops, etc.). If there is secretion in the eyes, antibiotic eye drops can be added. Before going to bed at night, apply a hot towel to your eyes, massage your eyelids, massage the lower eyelid upwards with your fingers, massage the upper eyelid downwards with your fingers, and then apply erythromycin eye ointment. Vitamin B2 can also be taken orally. In addition, you should pay attention to eye hygiene, avoid overusing your eyes, keep your eyes clean, and dry towels frequently in the sun, not in the shade.

3. With proper treatment, the condition will gradually improve! Recent studies have shown that in the early stages of MGD, the lipid composition of the secreted meibomian glands is abnormal, manifested as an increase in free fatty acids, which forms foam and affects the stability of the tear film, a decrease in wax esters, an increase in cholesterol esters, and increased viscosity that blocks the ducts, thereby providing the necessary substrate for bacterial reproduction. Some studies have found that cholesterol esterase and fatty wax esterase of Staphylococcus epidermidis can decompose meibomian gland lipids, and the metabolites formed can irritate the eyelid margin and aggravate the eye discomfort symptoms of MGD patients. MGD patients often experience tear deficiency, which leads to tear film instability, accelerated tear film evaporation rate, and increased tear osmotic pressure. In addition, the risk factors for MGD include lupus erythematosus, rosacea, etc.
