Is sodium bicarbonate edible?

Sodium bicarbonate is actually the baking soda we are familiar with. It is often used in daily life and is a food additive. However, it should be noted that sodium bicarbonate used in industry is not edible, so be careful to distinguish it.

1. Sodium bicarbonate is edible. Because sodium bicarbonate, commonly known as baking soda, is a commonly used food additive. However, industrial sodium bicarbonate is not edible.

2. Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO?) (Sodium Bicarbonate), commonly known as baking soda. White fine crystals, less soluble in water than sodium carbonate. It is also an industrial chemical. When the solid temperature is above 50℃, it begins to gradually decompose into sodium carbonate, carbon dioxide and water, and completely decomposes at 270℃. Sodium bicarbonate is an acid salt formed by the neutralization of a strong base and a weak acid, and it exhibits weak alkalinity when dissolved in water. This property allows it to be used as a leavening agent in food preparation. Sodium bicarbonate will leave residual sodium carbonate after reaction. Using too much will make the finished product have an alkaline taste.

3. It is easy to decompose when heated. Decomposes slowly in moist air. The reaction starts to produce CO? at about 50℃, and it is completely converted into sodium carbonate at 100℃. It decomposes rapidly in weak acids, and its aqueous solution begins to decompose into carbon dioxide and sodium carbonate at 20°C, and is completely decomposed at the boiling point. Its undisturbed solution made of cold water shows only a slight alkaline reaction to phenolphthalein test paper. Its alkalinity increases if left alone or at a higher temperature. The pH value of freshly prepared 0.1 mol/L aqueous solution at 25°C is 8.3.
