What causes high blood bilirubin?

Blood bilirubin is what the human body turns into after the death of red blood cells. It is also commonly known as jaundice. When the body's blood bilirubin is high, it will affect the body's liver function and cause many adverse effects on the body. However, many people wonder why their blood bilirubin is high. Let’s take a look at what high blood bilirubin means.

The jaundice in hepatitis patients is generally hepatocellular jaundice, which means that both direct bilirubin and indirect bilirubin are elevated, while in patients with cholestatic hepatitis the main symptom is elevated direct bilirubin. If all three types of bilirubins, including high blood bilirubin, high direct bilirubin and high indirect bilirubin, are elevated, it means that there is some damage to the liver. If too much red blood cells are destroyed, too much indirect bilirubin is produced, and the liver cannot completely convert it into direct bilirubin, hemolytic jaundice may occur;

When liver cells are diseased, or because bilirubin cannot be normally converted into bile, or because liver cells swell, the bile duct in the liver is compressed, the excretion of bile is blocked, and the bilirubin in the blood increases, then hepatocellular jaundice occurs; once the extrahepatic bile duct system develops a tumor or stones, the bile duct is blocked, bile cannot be excreted smoothly, and obstructive jaundice occurs.

In the metabolic process of bilirubin (bile component), liver cells undertake important tasks. First, when the indirect bilirubin formed by the decomposition of aging red blood cells is transported to the surface of liver cells with blood circulation, it is taken up by the liver cell membrane microvilli, enters the liver cells, and is fixedly bound to Y and Z proteins and sent to the smooth endoplasmic reticulum. Relying on the catalytic action of glucuronyl transferase, the indirect bilirubin is combined with glucuronic acid to form direct bilirubin (pigment I, II mixture); with the participation of endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi body, lysosome, etc., direct bilirubin is excreted into the capillary bile duct. It can be seen that liver cells have the function of taking in, binding, and excreting bilirubin.

Treatment of high blood bilirubin

In addition to effective drug treatment, diet therapy is also very important.

1. Adhere to the principle of a light diet.

2. Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables.

3. Avoid intake of high fat and high sugar foods.

4. Eat more mushrooms.

5. Don't drink alcohol. Diet therapy for high blood bilirubin

Patients with high blood bilirubin should eat a light diet and eat more fresh vegetables, such as green vegetables, celery, spinach, etc. Patients with high blood bilirubin should appropriately supplement some fruits, such as apples, pears,

6. Bananas, grapes, citrus fruits, etc. Eating more foods containing high-quality protein is also an indispensable part of the diet therapy for high blood bilirubin, such as milk, eggs, fish, lean meat, soy products, etc., to facilitate the regeneration and repair of liver cells. In addition, mushrooms, sesame, jujube, wolfberry, etc. contain trace elements and minerals. Appropriate use of some of them can supplement the trace elements lacking in the body.
