Hypothalamic dysfunction syndrome is a disease caused by many factors, including brain tumors, local infections, surgery, external losses, etc. The nervous system is prone to disorders, which may have adverse effects on the patient's appetite, intake function, and development. More serious problems may occur, such as self-abandonment, anorexia, and binge eating. Causes/Hypothalamic Dysfunction Syndrome The hypothalamus is located in the brain behind the eyes, behind the optic chiasm, and surrounding the 3rd ventricle. It is small in size but has very important functions. The function of the hypothalamus is to assist the pituitary gland in regulating the functions of endocrine glands such as the thyroid, adrenal glands, and gonads in order to regulate body weight, appetite, body temperature, sodium and water balance, and emotions. It is also related to activities such as growth, lactation, childbirth, and sleep in order to maintain a stable physiological and psychological state. Many reasons may cause hypothalamic dysfunction, including brain tumors, infection, surgery, trauma, malnutrition, anorexia or binge eating, and excessive iron intake. The most common tumor site in children is craniopharyngiomas, which are located in the pituitary infundibulum. In addition, the hypothalamus has a satiety center and a hunger center in the ventromedial nucleus and lateral nucleus, so people with hypothalamic dysfunction are also prone to appetite and developmental problems. Taking Prader-Willi Syndrome (commonly known as Prader-Willi Syndrome) as an example, since the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus is located in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus, the hypothalamic nucleus is located in the paraventricular nucleus. The number of oxytocin neurons in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (HPN) of patients is significantly less than that of the average person. This neuron is believed to be related to the feeling of fullness, so the deficiency of this neuron can easily cause the patient to have problems with insatiable appetite and obesity. |
