Evergreen shrub or small tree, 2-8m high, rarely 10-15m. The bark is gray, the twigs have brown lenticels, and the young branches are covered with gray-yellow tender hairs. Even-pinnate compound leaves are alternate, with 4-9 pairs of leaflets, rachis with narrow wings, grooved on the upper surface, and covered with gray pubescence; petiolules are extremely short; leaflets are leathery, oblong or obovate-oblong, relatively small, 1.3-3.5cm long, 0.8-1.5cm wide, slightly emarginate at the apex, with a thorn-like hard tip. The base is slightly asymmetrical, broadly cuneate, entire, slightly dorsally curled, with very fine pubescence on the midrib on both sides, and slightly shiny above. The panicles are axillary and emerge from the leaves; the flowers are small, purple-red, sessile, with 1 ovate bract; the male perianth is 5-8, oblong or oblong-lanceolate, 1.5-2mm long; the stamens are 5, rarely 7, the filaments are very short, the anthers are oblong, and the apex is pointed; the sterile pistil is present; the female perianth is 7-10 ovate-lanceolate, 1-1.5mm long; the ovary is spherical, about 0.7mm in diameter, glabrous, the style is very short, and the stigma is 3-lobed and curved outward. The drupe is spherical, about 5mm long and 6mm in diameter. It is red when ripe, with a pointed tip and reticular patterns on it.

Habitat distribution

Ecological environment: Grown in limestone forests or thickets at an altitude of 580-2700m.

Resource distribution: Distributed in southwest China, Guangxi, Tibet and other places.

Cultivation

Biological characteristics: It prefers warm and humid climate, plenty of sunshine and good drainage. Because the main root of the plant goes deep into the soil, it is suitable for planting in sandy loam with deep soil and rich humus.

Cultivation techniques

Propagate by seeds. Harvest the ripe and plump fruits, dry them and store them in sand. The seeds are sown in March of the following year, with furrows and rows sown with a row spacing of 30 cm and a seed spacing of 5 cm. Cover with soil and water to keep the soil moist. Transplant when the seedlings are 35-40cm tall. Planting should be done at a row spacing of 300cm×300cm.

Astringent; slightly bitter; cool.

Function and indications

Clears away heat; removes dampness; relieves stagnation. It is used to treat dysentery, diarrhea, food stagnation, eczema and rubella.

Dosage

For internal use: decoction, 9-15g. For external use: take appropriate amount and wash with decoction.
