What is the difference between iodine tincture and iodine tincture

What is the difference between iodine tincture and iodine tincture

Iodine tincture and iodine povidone are both common disinfectants. The main active ingredient in them is iodine. Although they are both disinfectants, there are also big differences between them. Iodine tincture has a relatively strong sterilization effect and is very effective in eliminating bacteria, viruses, and fungi. It is often used to treat viral, fungal, and bacterial diseases, while iodine tincture has a broad-spectrum bactericidal effect.

What is the difference between iodine and iodine tincture?

Both iodine tincture and povidone-iodine tincture are disinfectants, and the active ingredient is iodine. So, is there any difference between iodine tincture and iodine tincture?

1. Iodine tincture

It is an alcohol solution of iodine and potassium iodide. It can penetrate the skin and kill bacteria (2%-3% iodine is used for skin disinfection. 1% iodine is used for oral mucosa disinfection). However, it cannot be used together with mercurochrome, as this will produce toxic mercuric iodide.

Iodine tincture has a powerful effect in killing pathogens, and it can denature the proteins of pathogens. Iodine tincture can kill bacteria, fungi, viruses, amoeba, etc., and can be used to treat many bacterial, fungal, viral and other skin diseases.

2. Iodine

It is an amorphous combination of elemental iodine and polyvinylpyrrolidone. Medical iodine tincture usually has a low concentration (1% or less) and is light brown in color. Iodine tincture has a broad-spectrum bactericidal effect and can kill bacterial vegetative bodies, fungi, protozoa and some viruses. Used as a bactericidal disinfectant in medicine.

3. Generally speaking, there are certain differences between iodine tincture and iodine tincture.

Iodine tincture is a complex iodine and does not require alcohol deiodination when used. It is slightly more expensive. Iodine tincture needs to be deiodinated with alcohol. The price is relatively cheap. Moreover, iodine tincture uses ethanol (alcohol) as the solvent, while iodine tincture uses water as the solvent (of course, iodine is insoluble in water and must be made through a special process). Since iodine tincture is made with water as the solvent, it is not irritating to the skin, mucous membranes, and wounds, which is what makes it superior to iodine tincture. It is now widely used as a disinfectant for muscles, intravenous injections, external use, and surgical skin.

Iodine tincture is a complex of iodine and surfactant. Its characteristics are small odor, no irritation to mucous membranes, no yellowing of the skin, easy use, stable storage, and non-corrosive. This product is a highly effective broad-spectrum disinfectant, which is harmless to the human body, not prone to allergic reactions, has no drug resistance, and has stable and reliable efficacy. It can replace disinfectants such as tincture of iodine, red mercurochrome, rivonol, peracetic acid, chlorhexidine, chlorhexidine and chloride. This product is a disinfectant with iodine as the main active ingredient. The effective iodine content is 5.0g/l--6.0g/l (0.5%--0.6%), which can kill intestinal pathogens, pyogenic cocci, pathogenic yeasts and hospital infections. Pharmacology and Toxicology: This product is a broad-spectrum disinfectant composed of iodine and polyol ether, which can kill viruses, bacteria, spores, fungi and protozoa. Indications: Skin disinfection, mucous membrane flushing, pre-operative skin disinfection, and can also be used for skin and mucous membrane bacterial infections and instrument and environmental mildew removal.
