What are the methods for screening children's intelligence

Many parents hope that their children will become successful, and they don’t want their children to lose at the starting line. Parents pay great attention to their children’s intelligence. If they want to know their children’s intelligence, they have to test it through intelligence screening methods. For example, you can test a single ability, such as memory, movement, emotion, language comprehension, etc. The following will introduce the methods of children's intelligence screening.

There are many kinds of intelligence tests and intelligence scales in the world today, some of which test children's comprehensive abilities, while others test a single ability, such as memory, motor development, etc.

Intelligence tests commonly used in our country can be divided into two categories based on their methods: screening intelligence tests and diagnostic intelligence tests. Regardless of which category it is, the method is a one-on-one test, that is, the tester gives requirements or asks questions, and the tested person operates or answers. During the test, the child's attention, reaction, emotions and other factors must be observed. This is a common method in the world today, not testing with instruments or computers as some parents believe.

Screening intelligence tests are a relatively simple, quick and economical method. Some of them are also suitable for group testing and can screen out children with growth or intelligence problems in a relatively short period of time. Generally, only three results are presented: normal, abnormal or suspicious, and occasionally the specific IQ is also presented. The more commonly used methods are:

① Developmental Checklist for Infants (DDST): This method includes testing the children's personal-social adaptation, fine motor skills, language and gross motor skills. It has a total of 104 items and is suitable for children from newborns to 6 years old.

② Person drawing test: Suitable for children aged 4.5 to 9 years old, requiring children to draw a full-length portrait of a person according to their imagination. It can test children's intelligence level, thinking, reasoning, spatial concept, perception ability and emotions.

③ Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT for short): It is a test book with 120 pictures. Each picture consists of 4 pictures, and one of them represents a word. This method can measure children's ability to understand vocabulary. Suitable for children aged 4 to 9.

④ Preschool children's ability test (abbreviated as 50 items): The 50 items test abilities including self-awareness, body parts, preference, memory, visual perception and eye-hand coordination, knowledge, connection and abstraction, hearing and language comprehension, movement, etc., suitable for children aged 4 to 7 years old.

Those who are screened out as having problems can undergo diagnostic testing methods, and the intelligence quotient (IQ) or developmental quotient (DQ) can be obtained after the diagnostic test. The diagnostic tests commonly used in my country include the Geisel Scales of Infant Development, the Bray Scales of Infant Development, the Stanford-Binet Scale, the Wechsler Preschool and Primary School Intelligence Scales, etc. The diagnostic test method takes a long time to test, covers a wide range of areas, and gives a score such as IQ after the test. The results are more reliable and have great reference value for doctors' diagnosis.
