Medicine for sore throat

The throat is a place where the food we all eat must pass through. It can control our voice. If there is a problem with the throat, it may cause our voice to become hoarse or even unable to speak. Generally speaking, a cold will cause varying degrees of damage to the throat and cause coughing. It can usually be treated with cough syrup. Other sore throats should be treated symptomatically. So what is the medicine for treating sore throats?

Sore throat is one of the most common symptoms. It often occurs in the cold season of the year. Colds, tonsillitis, sinusitis, whooping cough, pharyngitis, viral infections and even myocardial infarction can cause sore throat.

Cause: Any substance that irritates the throat and oral mucosa may cause sore throat. They include: viruses, bacterial infections, allergic reactions, dust, cigarettes, exhaust fumes, hot drinks or food. Tooth or gum infections sometimes affect the throat. Chronic coughing, extremely dry environment, gastroesophageal reflux and speaking too loudly can also irritate the throat. Hoarseness is a common accompanying symptom. Common diseases that cause sore throat symptoms include: systemic viral infection, mumps, pharyngitis or tonsillitis, colds, and pharyngitis.

Treatment of acute pharyngitis (1) Patients with severe infection and obvious systemic symptoms should rest in bed, drink plenty of water and eat liquid food. Antiviral drugs, antibiotics or sulfonamides can be used. Traditional Chinese medicine preparations with antiviral and antibacterial effects can also be used.

(2) For patients with mild or no systemic symptoms, local treatment can be used: gargle with compound borax solution, take damifen throat lozenges, iodine lozenges and silver yellow lozenges orally, 4 to 6 lozenges per day. In addition, you can also use 1%~3% iodine glycerin and 2% silver nitrate to apply the swollen lymph follicles on the posterior pharyngeal wall, which has an anti-inflammatory effect.

Treatment of chronic pharyngitis (1) Eliminating the cause, quitting smoking and drinking, improving the working and living environment (avoiding dust and harmful gases), actively treating chronic inflammation of the nose and nasopharynx, correcting constipation and indigestion, and treating systemic diseases to enhance resistance are very important for the prevention and treatment of this disease.

(2) Traditional Chinese Medicine: Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that chronic pharyngitis is caused by Yin deficiency and excessive fire, which causes the throat to be malnourished. The treatment should be to nourish yin and reduce fire, with Zengye Decoction added or subtracted. You can also use appropriate amounts of double flower and Ophiopogon japonicus, add two pieces of Sterculia lychnophora, and use boiling water to brew it instead of tea.

(3) Local therapy ① Chronic simple pharyngitis: commonly used compound borax solution, furazolidone solution, 2% boric acid solution for gargling, or oral lozenges, such as iodine lozenges, mint lozenges, silver and yellow lozenges, and taking Liushen Pills and Jinsang Qingyin Pills. ② Chronic hypertrophic pharyngitis: In addition to the above methods, the lymph follicles on the posterior pharyngeal wall also need to be treated. Chemical drugs such as 10% silver nitrate solution can be used to cauterize the hypertrophic lymph follicles, or freezing or laser treatment can be used. However, the treatment area should not be too large or too deep to prevent dryness of the throat and atrophy of the pharyngeal mucosa in the future.

Atrophic pharyngitis can be treated by applying a small dose of iodine (2% iodine glycerol) to the posterior pharyngeal mucosa, which can promote glandular secretion and improve dryness symptoms. Nebulizer therapy can also relieve dryness symptoms. Taking vitamins A, B2, C, E, etc. can promote the growth of mucosal epithelium.
