How to repair a cracked walnut?

Walnuts are nuts that everyone has eaten, and the general population can eat walnuts with confidence. Parents can also make walnuts into suitable complementary foods for their babies, which can provide valuable nutrition for the baby's physical and mental development. For example, eating walnuts has the effect of strengthening the brain for children. In addition, many people now like to play with walnuts, so if the walnuts are cracked, what are the ways to repair them?

How to repair a cracked walnut?

Although the situation of ornamental walnuts is indeed not as good as before, fortunately there are still many players who like tradition, not only old players but also many new players. However, everyone has a common worry when playing with walnuts, especially players in the north, that is: cracking!

Why do walnuts crack?

In fact, it's not just walnuts that are prone to cracking. Olive pits, which are also fruit cores, also often face this problem. First of all, they contain moisture, and secondly, there is space inside them. When the moisture is lost and the internal and external pressure, temperature, and humidity are different, they will easily crack. Many novice players have heard that walnuts need to be brushed with water (new walnuts need to be peeled and cleaned with water), but they still need to be air-dried after brushing. It would be a shame if such walnuts don't crack!

What to do after it cracks?

As mentioned before, as long as there is moisture, wind, or a big temperature difference, the walnut will get angry and crack in a matter of minutes. What can we do then? Should we throw it away and get a new pair? What if another couple comes along like this?

So, don’t be afraid if you encounter a cracked walnut. As long as you find the right method and spend some time, you can still coax it back. Tomato Craftsman will take you to see how many friends treat the cracked "little peach".

Basic method 1: Let it fend for itself!

If you are just throwing a tantrum, then let him have enough! This method is the simplest and most crude. Soak the walnuts in water first, then put them into a sealed bag containing a small amount of water (enough to evenly wet the inside) and seal it. You can also wrap them with a wet towel or paper towel (soaked but not dripping) and put them in a sealed bag, and then you can completely ignore it!

Take it out and look at it again after 3 days, you will find that it has lost all its temper, and it is very obedient and smooth, with no cracks visible at all! Don't rush to plate it at this time. Use a paper towel to absorb the moisture on the surface, then put it in a dry sealed bag and continue to store it for about another week until it is completely dried in the shade.

Note: This method may be more effective for walnuts of the current year. It is said that walnuts newly picked from the tree are still very "alive" and have a certain self-healing ability. They will produce a gelatinous substance that will slowly heal the cracked walnuts.

Basic method 2: cold treatment!

This method can be said to be an enhanced version of method 1, and it can be called "cold explosive power"! But the principle is basically the same. Drop a few drops of water on the crack, not too much (you can also wrap it with a wet cloth or paper towel), then put it in a sealed bag and put it directly into the refrigerator's fresh-keeping layer. If you are not in a hurry, you can leave it for three to five days and then take it out and the cracks will basically not be visible.

Some friends may have tried to put it directly in the freezer. In fact, why doesn't Tomato Maker recommend it here? Because walnut kernels often open due to rapid water loss during air drying. At this time, adding water and putting it in the refrigerator can play the role of thermal expansion and contraction, and secondly, allowing it to absorb water again and swell the wood, so as to achieve the purpose of reducing cracks or even healing them. If it is placed in the freezer, it will be frozen before the water is fully absorbed and the desired effect cannot be achieved. On the contrary, the fresh-keeping layer gives it enough time to absorb and penetrate.
