The role of ammonium sulfate

The role of ammonium sulfate

Ammonium sulfate is a colorless crystal or white granules. Sulfuric acid has no smell to the nose, but it is irritating. The general function of sulfuric acid is to be used as a fertilizer for plants. Using it on barren land can improve the growing conditions of crops and provide the necessary nutrients for the growth of crops. So what exactly does sulfuric acid do? Let me introduce it to you below.

Ammonium sulfate is an excellent nitrogen fertilizer (commonly known as fertilizer powder), suitable for general soil and crops. It can make branches and leaves grow vigorously, improve fruit quality and yield, and enhance the crop's resistance to disasters. It can be used as base fertilizer, topdressing and seed fertilizer, but long-term use may cause soil compaction. It can undergo double decomposition reaction with salt to produce ammonium chloride, react with aluminum sulfate to produce ammonium alum, and be used with boric acid to manufacture refractory materials. Adding it to the plating solution can increase conductivity. It is also a catalyst for food color, a nitrogen source for culturing yeast in fresh yeast production, an auxiliary dyeing agent for acid dyes, and a deliming agent for leather. In addition, it is also used in beer brewing, chemical reagents and battery production, etc. Another important function is the mining of rare earths. Ammonium sulfate is used as the raw material, and the rare earth elements in the ore are exchanged out in the form of ion exchange. The leaching liquid is collected, simply filtered and separated, and then dried into rare earth ore. About 5 tons of ammonium sulfate are required to produce 1 ton of rare earth ore.

Colorless crystals or white granules. Odorless. Decomposes above 280℃. Solubility in water: 41.22g at 0℃, 43.47g at 25℃, 50.42g at 100℃. Insoluble in ethanol and acetone. The pH of 0.1 mol/L aqueous solution is 5.5. Relative density: 1.77. Refractive index: 1.521. Low toxicity, median lethal dose (rat, oral) 3000mG/kG. Irritating.

It is hygroscopic and solidifies into blocks after absorbing moisture. When heated to above 513℃, it completely decomposes into ammonia, nitrogen, sulfur dioxide and water. It releases ammonia when reacting with alkalis. It reacts with barium chloride solution to form barium sulfate precipitate. It can also cause protein to salt out.

This is an introduction to the role of ammonium sulfate. Ammonium sulfate has many biological uses and is mostly used in protein purification processes.
