How to determine calf edema

How to determine calf edema

Many people have encountered the problem of calf edema, but because edema is difficult to distinguish from fat, many people think that calf edema is caused by weight gain. In fact, this is a very dangerous cognition, because calf swelling generally indicates that there are certain problems in your body. If these problems are not solved in time, it will cause great harm to your body. So, how do you determine whether your calves are edematous?

1. How to distinguish edema legs

When you press the front of the calf or the instep, there will be an obvious depression, and it is not easy to bounce back. This is the type of leg that has edema.

2. Symptoms of edema legs

1. The bloodshot or blood vessels on the legs are more obvious.

2. Carrot-shaped lumps in the calves or ankles

3. The skin and muscles lack elasticity when touched.

4. Legs easily feel sore.

3. The difference between edema legs, fat legs and muscle legs

Lie down with your thighs relaxed and feel the underside of your thighs to see how thick the skin and fat are. If you have a lot of fat, it is the fat type. If you have thin skin but bulging, it is edema. If you have obvious quadriceps lines on the front of your thigh when you tighten your legs, it is the muscle type. The specific manifestations are:

1. Make your legs tense. In muscular legs, you can usually see the shape of the muscles, and they feel very hard. Those that feel very soft are fat, and edema will not rebound immediately when pressed.

2. Fat is usually under the skin, while muscles are usually attached to bones. So, relax your legs, if you can easily grab some with your hands, it is fat. This aspect is most effective if done after massaging the legs, as the stiff fat will be softened and can be easily grasped.

3. If you haven’t exercised for a long time, you must have too much fat - even if you had muscles before, they have started to be lost, and fat has been filled in. This is the so-called "muscular calves".

4. Causes of edema in the legs

Most of them are related to occupation, leg activity, pregnancy, genetics and long-term medication. People who are prone to edema legs actually have poor blood circulation in their legs.

5. Ways to improve edema legs

1. Use bathing to promote blood circulation;

2. Exercise improves lower limb circulation;

3. Wear elastic socks;

4. Lotion relieves stress.
