Consequences of timing belt breakage

Consequences of timing belt breakage

We know that the main source of power for a car to run normally is the engine, and the normal operation of the engine requires the coordinated operation of various components. The timing belt is an important component of the engine and is generally made of rubber. It will wear and age after long-term use and needs to be replaced regularly, otherwise it will break, which will have a great impact on the engine function. So, what are the consequences of a broken timing belt?

The timing belt is connected to the crankshaft and has a certain transmission ratio to ensure the accuracy of the intake and exhaust timing. The timing belt is a rubber component. As the usage time increases, the timing belt and its accessories will experience certain wear or aging.

When the timing belt is excessively worn or aged, it is easy to break. When the timing belt breaks, the valve and ignition system cannot operate normally. The piston will move up and down due to inertia, and the opening and closing of the valve has stopped. In the narrow combustion chamber, the piston is likely to collide with the valve, causing the valve push rod to be bent, the top of the piston to be dented, and even holes to be knocked out of the cylinder head. In this case, the engine either needs a major overhaul or is scrapped.

If the timing belt breaks, it will cause damage to the internal valves of the engine, which is very harmful. To avoid the timing belt from breaking, manufacturers will have strict requirements to replace the car timing belt and its accessories within the specified period. Depending on the engine structure, generally speaking, the timing belt should be replaced when the vehicle has traveled 60,000 to 100,000 kilometers.

The replacement cycle recommended by the manufacturer has a certain margin, and the actual life of the belt is longer than that recommended by the manufacturer, but car owners cannot take chances. When the vehicle has traveled 80,000 kilometers, you should consider replacing the timing belt.

In addition, do not neglect to check the timing belt during regular vehicle maintenance. According to the actual situation, judge whether the timing belt can continue to be used. If cracks, reduced hardness or wear appear, consider replacing the timing belt.

The timing belt is made of rubber. It is normal for it to age or wear out after a certain period of use. However, if it is not replaced in time, it will pose a great threat to the normal operation of the engine. This is an introduction to the consequences of a broken timing belt. I hope it can help everyone.
