Ethyl carbamate

Ethyl carbamate

Many people have not heard of ethyl carbamate. Those who know about ethyl carbamate know what its main use is, so when people suddenly come into contact with it, they will think that this is a harmless element. In fact, its main function is to give some fish and animals anesthesia, and it cannot be used for human body, so try not to let it come into contact with skin and body for a long time.

Intended Use

Fishery use

Effect and Use: Ethyl carbamate has a weak inhibitory effect on the nerve center of fish, and has little effect on respiration and blood circulation. It has the characteristics of fast and strong action. It is a relatively safe anesthetic for fish, and anesthesia can last for 2-4 hours.

Usage and Dosage: Place the broodstock in a 0.1% to 0.4% ethyl carbamate aqueous solution for transportation.

Application Note: It is best to prepare freshly before use.

Medical Uses

It is used medically as a sedative and mild hypnotic, and also has a weak diuretic effect. Ethyl carbamate also has the effect of inhibiting cell division, reducing the formation of white blood cells in the blood, and has a certain effect on myeloid leukemia. In addition, it is also used as a solubilizing agent, such as ethyl carbamate in quinine urethane injection for the treatment of varicose veins.

When ethyl carbamate is mixed and ground with the following drugs, it will liquefy or form lumps. Antihistamine, camphor, salicylic acid, benzoic acid, phenyl salicylate, thymol, chloral hydrate, menthol, naphthol, phenol, and m-benzene. When mixed and ground with quinine at above 30°C, it can form lumps.

Ethyl carbamate is often used to increase the solubility of quinine. If quinine contains copper impurities, it will appear green or blue when combined with urethane.

Animal husbandry use

Effect and Use: Ethyl carbamate has less inhibitory effect on the central nervous system than chloral hydrate, and has little effect on respiration and blood circulation. Before the discovery of barbiturates, it was widely used as an anesthetic for experimental animals with a fast and strong effect. It can only be used as a hypnotic for dogs to induce sleep. Even large doses will not produce an anesthetic effect on large animals such as horses. Ethyl carbamate has a weak inhibitory effect on the medullary respiratory center and is a relatively safe anesthetic for experimental animals. Anesthesia can last for 2 to 4 hours.

Usage and Dosage: Dosage for intravenous or intraperitoneal injection: 0.75-1 g/kg body weight per time for dogs, cats, and rabbits, prepared into 30% solution. Dosage for intramuscular injection: 1-1.5 g/kg body weight per time for guinea pigs, rats, and mice; 1.25 g/kg body weight per time for birds, prepared into a 20% solution. The dosage for subcutaneous lymph sac injection in frogs is 2 g/kg body weight per time, prepared into a 20% solution.
