Hernia is actually what we call hernia, which is a common disease among children. In fact, the occurrence of hernia has a lot to do with the child's physique. Some weak or underdeveloped children often suffer from hernia. If a child has hernia, parents should take the child to the hospital for treatment in time, because hernia is likely to cause abdominal pain, vomiting, etc. in children. Causes of Hernia The formation of hernia has a lot to do with the child's physique. Hernia is caused by the child's incomplete development and frequent crying, which creates negative pressure in the abdominal cavity, leading to increased air pressure in the abdominal cavity, forcing the free organs in the abdominal cavity, such as the small intestine, cecum, greater omentum, bladder, ovaries, fallopian tubes, etc., to drill into any hole. In other words, the root cause of hernia is poor blood circulation. The general incidence of hernia is 1%-4%. Most cases occur at 2-3 months of age, but some occur as late as 1-2 years of age. The testicles of boys are 10 times that of girls. This is because boys' testicles descend to the scrotum through the inguinal canal before birth, and the peritoneum that moves downward forms the processus vaginalis. If the processus vaginalis has not closed after the baby is born, or has closed incompletely, it will become a larger cavity, and the contents of the abdominal cavity will protrude to the body surface, forming a hernia. Because the right testicle descends slightly later than the left and the processus vaginalis is closed later, there are more cases of right inguinal hernias. Of course, girls may also develop hernias due to weak abdominal walls, but the incidence rate is relatively low. It occurs more often in premature infants and may occur on both sides. Symptoms of hernia in children The main symptom of hernia is that you can see or feel a lump in the groin area. In infants, it is usually discovered during diaper changes, while in older children, it is usually discovered during bathing or at health clinics. 1. Hernia in children may occur days, months or years after birth. 2. Usually when a child is crying, exercising vigorously, or has dry stools, there will be a protruding lump in the groin, which sometimes extends to the scrotum or labia area; it will disappear on its own when the child lies flat or is pressed with the hands. 3. Once the hernia becomes incarcerated (the hernia mass cannot be reduced), abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, anorexia or crying and irritability will occur. 4. In the early stage of pediatric hernia, the swelling may disappear when the child lies flat and quiet; as the intra-abdominal pressure continues to increase, the swelling may drop into the scrotum. At this time, if the factors causing increased intra-abdominal pressure can be eliminated, and the child can be made to lie flat, or the swelling can be gently pushed toward the abdominal cavity, the swelling can return to the abdominal cavity through the channel through which the testicle descends, and the swelling disappears. This situation is called reducible hernia. 5. If the tumor cannot be returned to the abdominal cavity, abdominal pain will intensify, crying will continue, and then vomiting, abdominal distension, difficulty defecation and other intestinal obstruction symptoms will appear. An oval tumor can be seen in the groin or scrotum, with a hard texture and obvious tenderness. If the intestine cannot be returned for a long time, serious complications such as intestinal ischemia and necrosis may occur. 6. In addition to being able to see or feel lumps, some children may experience constipation, loss of appetite, spitting up, etc. Some may become prone to crying, restlessness, etc. If the scrotal hernia is too large, it will cause inconvenience in movement. |
