It is considered to be a sebaceous cyst, commonly known as a "pimple". Sebaceous cyst, commonly known as "sebaceous tumor", refers to the formation of cysts due to accumulation of sebaceous glands in the gland after the sebaceous gland duct is blocked. They are mostly distributed in the skin or subcutaneous tissue of the head, trunk or genitals, are adhered to nearby tissues, and can be pushed. It is mainly caused by the obstruction of the sebaceous gland excretion duct, which causes the sebaceous gland cystic epithelium to swell with the gradually increasing contents to form a retention cyst. This is the most common type of benign skin tumor, especially in young people who are in their period of rapid growth and development. Sebaceous cysts are most common on the scalp and face, followed by the trunk. Due to the different depths and amounts of contents, their sizes vary greatly. It is often diagnosed as lipoma, fibroma, etc. Sebaceous cysts grow very slowly, but patients can still feel them gradually increasing in size. The cause of the disease is obstruction of the sebaceous gland duct, which leads to congestion and impaired sebaceous gland excretion. Obstruction of sebaceous gland ducts is mostly caused by dust blockage and bacterial infection. Clinical symptoms 1. Commonly seen on the face with abundant sebaceous glands, they can be as small as beans or as large as small oranges. The cyst is round, located within the skin and protrudes toward the skin surface. The cyst wall is tightly adhered to the skin, and there may be a small pigmented spot in the center. Clinically, it can be differentiated from epidermoid cyst based on this main feature. Grayish white curd-like contents with a foul odor may occasionally flow out. 2. Sebaceous cysts develop slowly, are round in shape, have clear boundaries with surrounding tissues, are soft in texture, are non-tender, and are movable. Generally no symptoms. 3. Secondary infection of sebaceous cyst may manifest as: local skin redness, swelling, softening, increased skin temperature, pain, and suppuration. complication Sebaceous cysts are often complicated by infection, which causes the cyst to rupture and temporarily disappear, but it will form scars and is prone to recurrence. Examination/plasty 1. Ultrasound examination If necessary, ultrasound examination can be performed to understand the nature of the cyst and its relationship with surrounding tissues. 2. Histopathological examination Biopsy is generally not required before surgery, but can be sent for pathological examination after surgery. 3. Laboratory examination People with multiple sebaceous cysts throughout the body should undergo examinations of metabolic and endocrine functions. |
