Hexavalent chromium is harmful to human body

With the current prosperity of the chemical industry, our air quality is much worse than before. In order to reduce costs, many illegal factories cut corners when discharging pollutants, and discharge untreated wastewater and exhaust gas without treatment, or discharge them incompletely after treatment. There was once a report saying that the hexavalent iodine content in the water in a certain area exceeded the standard. So what kind of harm does hexavalent iodine have on our human body, or what kind of pain can it bring to people?

Hexavalent chromium is a poison if swallowed/extremely toxic if inhaled. Skin contact may cause allergies. It is also likely to cause hereditary genetic defects and may cause cancer if inhaled. It is a persistent hazard to the environment. But these are the properties of hexavalent chromium; chromium metal, trivalent or tetravalent chromium do not have these toxicities. Excessive amounts (more than 10 ppm) of hexavalent chromium can be lethal to aquatic life. Experiments have shown that hexavalent chromium in contaminated drinking water can cause cancer. Hexavalent chromium compounds are often used in electroplating, leather making, etc. After animals drink water containing hexavalent chromium, the hexavalent chromium will be absorbed by the cells of many tissues and organs in the body.

Hexavalent chromium is easily absorbed by the human body and can enter the human body through the digestive tract, respiratory tract, skin and mucous membranes. Breathing air containing different concentrations of chromic anhydride can cause varying degrees of hoarseness and nasal mucosal atrophy. In severe cases, it can also cause nasal septum perforation and bronchial dilation. When it invades the digestive tract, it can cause vomiting and abdominal pain. When it penetrates the skin, it can cause dermatitis and eczema. The greatest hazard is the risk of cancer through long-term or short-term contact or inhalation.

Hexavalent chromium compounds are carcinogenic in the body and can cause a host of other health problems. For example, inhalation of certain higher concentrations of hexavalent chromium compounds can cause runny nose, sneezing, itching, nosebleeds, ulcers, and nasal septum perforation. Short-term, high-dose exposure can produce adverse consequences at the contact site, including ulcers, nasal mucosal irritation, and nasal septum perforation. Ingestion of very large doses of chromium can cause kidney and liver damage, nausea, gastrointestinal irritation, stomach ulcers, cramps, and even death. Skin contact may cause ulcers or allergic reactions (hexavalent chromium is one of the most allergenic metals, second only to nickel). Hexavalent chromium ions are very toxic to human health. Its compounds have strong oxidizing effects on human body

It is harmful to the digestive tract, respiratory tract, skin and mucous membranes. What's worse, chromium is carcinogenic, and the main site of cancer caused by chromium is the lungs.
