The function of coral sand

The function of coral sand

I don’t know if you have ever seen coral sand in your life, but people who have raised goldfish should be very clear about the function of this substance. When people raise goldfish, they usually put a layer of coral sand in the fish tank. Although they put coral sand, most people don’t know what the function of coral sand is. As the name suggests, coral sand is mainly composed of coral fragments. So what is the specific function of coral sand?

Coral sand is a calcareous sand composed mainly of coral debris and also of calcareous algae, foraminifera and echinoderm fragments. Its calcium content reaches 90% and it is mainly distributed around coral islands or coral reefs.

The functions of coral sand in fish tanks are as follows:

1. The main component of coral sand is Ca element, which can adjust the pH value of water in the fish tank.

2. It not only beautifies the landscape and creates beautiful waves, but also fixes the landscape objects.

3. It is beneficial to the reproduction and survival of aerobic bacteria and denitrifying bacteria.

Most people think that the whiter and finer the "bottom sand" at the bottom of the aquarium is, the better it looks. In fact, this is a wrong concept, because many white coral sands are bleached, and the fine coral sand will affect the filtering effect, causing the dirt in the aquarium to accumulate in the bottom sand layer. Because the sand is too small, it lacks capillary pores and cannot cultivate a large number of "nitrifying bacteria", which makes it impossible to completely decompose toxic substances in the aquarium, which is harmful to aquatic animals. Therefore, larger coral sand should be used as bottom sand. Coral reef stone is also called "biological stone". It is indispensable for landscaping in aquarium. It is best to collect the biological stone directly from the sea and put it into the aquarium immediately; because there are many algae and other organisms growing on the biological stone in the sea, which are food for many fish; at the same time, a large number of nitrifying bacteria are attached, which has a great stabilizing effect on the water quality.

However, this kind of "activated" bio-stone is not easy to obtain and is usually replaced by the processed bio-stone currently sold on the market. After buying it, you must first wash it with tap water and soak it for 3-4 days, then expose it to sunlight, and it can be used after it is dry; but this treated biological stone is "dead", and it must be cultivated for a long time in the aquarium so that its surface is covered with green algae and "regenerated".
