Can I smoke after having my teeth pulled out?

You need to have a good rest in a short period of time. It is best not to exercise on the same day and not to drink alcohol within a week. You cannot eat any cold, spicy or greasy food, including any irritating food. If you drink soup, don't drink it immediately if it is too hot. You can put it at room temperature. Try not to let various things touch the teeth that have just been extracted. Smoking is also not allowed.

Things to note before tooth extraction:

1. Get enough rest the day before tooth extraction. Do not engage in strenuous exercise or drink alcohol on the day of tooth extraction. If you are not in good health, you should avoid tooth extraction.

2. You should eat before tooth extraction. Extracting a tooth on an empty stomach can easily cause collapse or fainting. Before having a tooth pulled, you should adjust your mindset and eliminate tension.

3. Before tooth extraction, tell the doctor the patient's medical history so that relevant examinations can be conducted and treatment plans can be formulated:

1) Patients with hypertension: Be sure to rest and control blood pressure before tooth extraction, and wait until blood pressure stabilizes before tooth extraction; patients with myocardial infarction should wait 6 months after the most recent myocardial infarction before tooth extraction. Patients with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases can stop taking anticoagulant drugs such as aspirin before and after tooth extraction.

2) Diabetic patients: Control blood sugar before tooth extraction surgery, and take antibiotics for 3 days before tooth extraction surgery to avoid wound infection.

3) For those with acute inflammation: tooth extraction should be postponed.

4) Patients with blood diseases or suspected blood mechanism disorders: such as hemophilia, thrombocytopenic purpura, leukemia, cirrhosis, patients with damaged liver function, and patients who are prone to bleeding, etc., are generally treated first, or ask the doctor to decide whether the tooth can be extracted.

5) Women should inform their doctors of their special periods or medical history, such as menstruation, pregnancy, history of habitual miscarriage, etc.

4. It is best for the elderly to have someone accompany them when having a tooth extracted.

There are a few things to keep in mind after tooth extraction:

1. After tooth extraction, you should bite the gauze roll placed on the wound and spit it out after 40 minutes. It is normal for the patient to have blood mixed in his saliva on the day of tooth extraction.

2. If there is active bleeding after tooth extraction and the amount of bleeding is heavy, the patient does not need to be nervous and should return for a follow-up visit immediately and ask the doctor to handle the situation properly. For general bleeding, place gelatin sponge or tannic acid powder, Yunnan Baiyao, etc. on the bleeding area, then bite the gauze roll for 30 minutes and the bleeding will stop. If the bleeding still does not stop after these treatments, the cause must be further investigated before treatment.

1. The local cause of bleeding is gingival laceration. There will be a lot of bleeding at the tear, so the gum tissue should be aligned and sutured. If there are tooth fragments and broken free alveolar bone remaining in the tooth extraction wound, the blood clot in the extraction socket should be scraped off and the foreign body should be removed, and the bleeding will stop. If there is inflammation under the tooth root, there will be a lot of bleeding after tooth extraction. It is advisable to fill the extraction wound with iodine gauze and press it tightly to prevent the gauze from falling off. Anti-inflammatory drugs can also be taken at the same time.

2. Systemic causes of bleeding: People with coagulation disorders will bleed more after tooth extraction. After finding out the cause, in addition to local treatment, systemic diseases should be actively treated.

3. Do not lick the wound with the tip of your tongue or touch the wound with your fingers, and do not stuff the wound with unsterilized paper, cotton, etc. to avoid infection and suppuration of the wound. If a blood clot infection occurs in the alveolar socket, which usually occurs 3-4 days after surgery, the blood clot will turn gray-brown, accompanied by a putrid and foul-smelling secretion. The alveolar bone wall will lose the coverage of the blood clot and become exposed, causing obvious pain. This phenomenon is medically called "dry socket" and should be treated immediately. First wash the wound with a cotton ball filled with 3% hydrogen peroxide or rinse it repeatedly with a 1:5000 potassium permanganate solution, then place an iodine gauze strip in the tooth socket. You can also add a few drops of eugenol or dicaine to help relieve pain. This method has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and wound healing effects. Change the dressing 2-3 times a week. Generally, new granulation tissue will grow after 4-5 days and the pain will be relieved. As the granulation tissue increases, the pain will gradually disappear.
