The eyes of newborns are relatively fragile, so parents need to protect their babies' eyes to prevent their eyes from being too damaged during the growth and development process. As they grow older, you can slowly let them look at some objects, but try not to take them to bask in the sun, as this will not do any good for their eyes and will cause some damage.

* First day after birth - eyes are often closed, sometimes open and closed. Eye movements are purposeless in the first few days. After a few days, the baby starts to stare at lights. Strong light stimulation can cause the eyes to close.

* 2 weeks after birth - In response to a light (such as a flashlight) from half a meter away moving towards the baby, the baby will turn his eyes inward.

* 3 weeks after birth - can focus on larger objects and distinguish their colors, and both eyes can follow the movement of objects in one direction.

* 2 months - eyes can follow an adult's hand and stare at it for a long time.

* 3 months – Not only can the eyes follow moving objects, but the head also moves accordingly.

* 4 months – The baby can lift his head and often looks at his hands.

* 6 months - Able to sit up, and when the head and eyes make a larger rotation with the object, the body can also turn along with it, and can stare at brightly colored toys or other targets for half a minute.

* 9 months - can focus on a single line on the screen, with a visual acuity of about 0.1.

* 12 months - Most babies can play with toys, look at nearby objects, and point out the nose, eyes or hair according to their mother's instructions.

* 2-3 years old - visual acuity is about 0.5-0.6, almost close to that of adults, but it is very easy to lose vision at this time.

* 4-5 years old - visual acuity is about 1.0, various eye physiological reflexes have been formed and become stable, and it is not easy to lose vision at this time.

* 6-7 years old – Enters adult visual state.

* 8 years old - various eye reflexes have become very stable and vision development is basically completed.

Baby's special phenomenon

Phenomenon 1: Babies under 1 year old have immature eyeballs, short eye diameters, and are in a farsighted state. When looking at close objects, the two eyes cannot be on the same axis, so there is a common esotropia, the so-called "cross-eye". As you age and your eyeball develops, this phenomenon will disappear.

Phenomenon 2: As the baby's facial bones develop, the root of the nose appears relatively wider, so it looks as if the eyeballs are tilted inward, like "cross-eyed". This is an illusion caused by pseudoesotropia; the eyeball is actually in normal position. In the future, this phenomenon will disappear as the facial bones, orbital bones and nasal bones develop.

Baby's normal visual response test method

Examination 1: The newborn has pupils that react to light

Hold a flashlight, cover one of your baby's eyes first, and then shine the flashlight into the other uncovered eye. If the pupil shrinks immediately after being exposed to light, it is a normal visual reaction. Test the other eye in the same way. If the pupil cannot shrink with light, it is abnormal.

Method 2: 2-month-old baby has fixation reaction and blink reaction

Put the bottle or toy in front of the baby. If the baby blinks the moment he sees the object in front of him, it is a normal visual reaction, that is, the blink reaction. Then the baby's eyes will stare at the object in front of him for a certain period of time, which is the so-called fixation reaction. When the baby is older, his eyes will be able to move as the object he is staring at moves.
