Clinical manifestations of sella turcica tumors

Clinical manifestations of sella turcica tumors

Mr. Chen has been feeling dizzy at work recently, and sometimes he vomits when eating. His vision has also deteriorated significantly. What makes Mr. Li feel most embarrassed is that his sexual function seems to be impaired and he feels powerless. So Mr. Li rushed to the hospital. After the doctor's questioning and further examination, CT scan found a 2.5X2.5X3cm soft tissue mass in the sella turcica area, with uneven density, spotty calcification, unclear borders, and bone destruction adjacent to the sella turcica. There is no obvious density or abnormal morphology change in the brain parenchyma. The midline structure is centered.

After receiving the CT report, the doctor told Mr. Li that this was a tumor in the sella turcica area, a type of brain cancer, whose main manifestations are visual impairment and endocrine dysfunction symptoms.

(1) Visual impairment: Brain tumors grow above the sella turcica and compress the optic chiasm, causing decreased vision and visual field defects, which often manifest as visual impairment. In severe cases, it can even lead to blindness. Fundus examination can reveal primary optic atrophy.

(2) Endocrine dysfunction: Tumors in the sella turcica can cause endocrine dysfunction, such as hypogonadism. Males may experience impotence and decreased libido, while females may experience prolonged menstruation or amenorrhea.

Tips: What is the sella turcica area?

The sella turcica area refers to the sella turcica and its surrounding areas in the central part of the middle cranial fossa. The anterior boundary is the lateral edge of the anterior clinoid process and the anterior edge of the anterior decussate groove, and the posterior boundary is the posterior clinoid process and the dorsum sella, with the carotid grooves on both sides. This area is small, with an area of about 5.5 cm2, with many structures and complex adjacent relationships. It is a high-incidence site of disease.
