My grandmother had esophageal cancer. Will it be inherited? Esophageal cancer is not a clear hereditary disease, but there is increasing evidence that esophageal cancer does have a genetic tendency and is related to heredity. Now, there is a lot of evidence about cancer inheritance. From the incidence of cancer in the family to the research at the cellular and molecular levels, it supports that cancer has a genetic tendency. Lifestyle and exposure to certain carcinogens in the environment (family members' living environment and lifestyle are similar) can increase the body's susceptibility to esophageal cancer. It has also been found that some patients with congenital immunodeficiency have a much higher risk of esophageal cancer than normal people. Esophageal cancer has a family hereditary tendency, but it is not necessarily inherited. Those with a family history need regular checkups, generally once a year after the age of 35. Whether esophageal cancer is related to family inheritance is a question of general concern. In a family, esophageal cancer can occur in the same generation or in 2 to 3 consecutive generations. According to a survey in some high-incidence areas of esophageal cancer in my country, 23.95% to 61% of esophageal cancer patients have a family history. Among patients with a family history, esophageal cancer patients are mainly paternal, followed by maternal, and collateral least. Whether this obvious family clustering phenomenon of esophageal cancer is caused by inheritance or a common living environment has not yet been determined. It is currently believed that esophageal cancer is not a direct hereditary disease, but there is a tendency for many cases of esophageal cancer to occur in families. If someone in the family has esophageal cancer, the chances of their children developing esophageal cancer are several times higher than that of the general population. These cancers are called hereditary familial cancers. The influence of this genetic factor is medically called genetic susceptibility. |
